Ion exchange resin ends up in water treatment, herbal extraction, food processing and wastewater recovery. A bad batch can reach a customer's process months later, so resin producers treat air quality as a product issue rather than a utility one.
This plant replaced its air supply with a DREAM DMWV-75G dry oil-free rotary screw compressor and built an ISO 8573-1 Class 0 system for process air, pneumatic control and material conveying.
| Customer | Ion exchange resin manufacturer, specialty chemicals |
| Downstream markets | Water treatment, herbal extraction, food processing, wastewater treatment |
| Air applications | Process air, pneumatic control, material conveying |
| Requirement | Oil-free air to ISO 8573-1 Class 0; equipment that survives a corrosive plant |
| Solution | DREAM DMWV-75G dry oil-free rotary screw compressor |
| Result | Oil-free air at the source, VSD part-load control, 304 stainless air piping |
Resin works through surface area. Each bead holds a large internal pore network, and the pore walls carry the groups that exchange ions. Oil aerosol or vapour that reaches the bed coats the beads and blocks the pores. Exchange capacity drops, regeneration gets less effective, and contamination can carry into the treated liquid.
For resin sold into drinking water and food applications, that means rejected batches and complaints from customers who cannot trace the cause.
The plant sits in a humid, chemically aggressive area. Carbon steel pipework and coated parts corrode, and a pinhole in an air line costs pressure and lets contamination in.
An oil-injected compressor can reach high purity with coalescing and carbon filters. Those filters still have to be changed on time, and a saturated element passes oil. Oil-free compression takes the oil out of the compression chamber instead, so there is nothing to remove downstream.
ISO 8573-1 Class 0 is the strictest oil class in the standard. The limit is agreed between supplier and user and must be tighter than Class 1, which allows 0.01 mg/m³ total oil. Buyers should ask for the certificate and the test conditions behind it.
Oil-free compression does not remove moisture or particles. This installation was designed as a full train: compressor, dryer and filters.
The unit is a 75 kW (100 hp) dry oil-free rotary screw compressor from the DREAM DMW(V)-G series.
| Duty | What it does | Risk if oil is present |
|---|---|---|
| Process air | Part of the reaction environment | Contaminates the batch |
| Pneumatic control | Valves and actuators on reactors and filter presses | Sticking spools, false trips |
| Material conveying | Moves resin beads through lines | Beads stick and clump in the line |
Oil is now kept out of the air path by design rather than by filtration alone.

Why does resin production need oil-free air?
Oil coats the beads and blocks the internal pores, which lowers exchange capacity and can carry contamination into the treated liquid. Can filters make an oil-injected compressor suitable?
They reduce the risk but do not remove it. A saturated element passes oil. Oil-free compression removes the oil at the source.Does a Class 0 compressor still need a dryer and filters?
Yes. It removes compressor oil, not humidity or atmospheric particles.
