Summer heat is tough on air compressors. When temperatures rise, compressors run hotter, work harder, and break down more often.
For factories that run 24/7, an unexpected shutdown during summer is the last thing you need. The good news is that most heat-related problems are preventable with the right maintenance routine.
Here's what you need to do.
High temperatures affect compressors in a few ways:
•Hot air is less dense, so the compressor has to work harder to deliver the same output
•Oil breaks down faster in high heat, losing its ability to protect moving parts
•Hot air holds more moisture, which means more water in the system
•The cooling system has to work harder, and if it's not clean, overheating is almost guaranteed
Skip summer maintenance, and you're asking for trouble.

Make sure the compressor room has good airflow. Keep the area clear of clutter, check that vents aren't blocked, and try to keep room temperature below 35°C. If the room gets too hot, add an exhaust fan or duct the hot air outside.
Heat kills oil. Check oil levels regularly and look at the oil itself. If it's dark or smells burnt, change it. During summer, consider shorter oil change intervals than you'd normally use.
The cooler is where heat leaves the system. If it's clogged with dust and dirt, heat stays in.
•Blow out the cooler fins with compressed air (blow backward from normal airflow)
•For heavy buildup, wash with mild cleaner and water—just protect the electrical parts first
•Check that the cooling fan spins freely and isn't damaged
A clean cooler is the single most important thing you can do for summer reliability.
Clogged air filters restrict airflow and make the compressor work harder. Check and replace intake filters and oil filters as needed.
Heat can loosen connections and degrade wiring. Check terminals for looseness or discoloration. Tighten anything that's loose.
More moisture in the air means more water in the system. Make sure your automatic drains are working properly. If you don't have them, consider adding them.
Most screw compressors have a maximum discharge temperature around 95°C for air-cooled units and 90°C for water-cooled units.
Keep an eye on the display. If the temperature starts creeping up, investigate before it trips. Don't wait until the machine shuts itself down.
Also check the room temperature. If the room is hot, the compressor will be hot. Fix the room, and you fix half the problem.
•If possible, avoid running the compressor at full load during the hottest part of the day
•If you have multiple compressors, rotate them to spread the heat load
•Keep spare belts, filters, and a fan motor on hand—so you're not waiting for parts if something fails
